Reddish brown Sekishu style roof tiles and buildings painted with rouge-colored bengara (iron oxide) catch the eyes of visitors. Wealthy merchants who gained a large profit from the production of bengara founded the town. Their elaborately designed residences are worth seeing. Hands-on classes on making handkerchiefs and bags with bengara are available.
