San‘in Kaigan Geopark covers a vast area straddling the prefectures of Kyoto, Hyogo, and Tottori. It offers idyllic coastal trails, the likes of which are difficult to find anywhere in the world. The geopark trail offers 27 distinct routes, each with its own unique scenery and topography waiting to be discovered as you hike. This time, we walked along the Uradome Coastal Trail in Tottori’s Iwami Town. We came across steep cliffs, unusual rock formations, and caves. Each impressive geological feature impressed on us the beauty and grandeur of the natural landscape of the San’in Kaigan Geopark. The Kyoto Animation series “Free!” based its story in Iwami Town and has since become a popular destination for anime fans. The best way to discover the breathtaking views of the Sea of Japan and learn more about the dramatic birth of the Japanese archipelago etched on the landscape is to hire one of the local guides all of whom are experts on the Sain’in Kaigan Geopark Trail.
