The temple was built by the monk Jikaku in 849 for a place of religions training of Tendai sect Buddhism. Nageire-do hall, designated as a national treasure, is said to be one of Japan’s oldest Shinto structures. The hall inside a cave is built on the edge of a 500 meter high cliff. Visitors can reach it after forty minutes of strenuous walking. Other religious buildings are also worth seeing.
